Our Robust Magnetic Roof Mount is a popular removable option for vehicle installs, but it only works with certain vehicle roof types. Here's what to check before ordering.
What the magnetic mount needs
The mount uses strong 87mm earth magnets to hold onto the vehicle. For a secure hold, this requires:
- A flat, metal roof surface — the magnets need direct contact with steel to grip properly
- A clean surface, free of dirt, wax build-up, or aftermarket coatings that could reduce magnetic contact
When it won't suit your vehicle
If your vehicle's roof is fibreglass, aluminium composite, has a moulded/textured panel, or doesn't have a clear flat area (e.g. obstructed by roof racks, rails, or a canopy), the magnetic mount won't hold securely — you'll need a different mounting method.
Alternatives if your vehicle doesn't suit magnetic mounting
- Starlink Mini Basic In-Motion Mount — low-profile, installs via a roof rack setup instead of relying on magnets
- Starlink Mini Road Bundle — includes the Stealth Mount, a 12V Power Booster, and a set of 4 magnets, for a more fixed/semi-permanent install
Don't confuse this with the Telescopic Pole Mount
The Telescopic Pole Mount is a separate product intended for stationary base-station setups only — it is not designed for use while a vehicle is moving. If you do want to anchor a telescopic pole to a vehicle, this requires the top and bottom mounting brackets to be permanently affixed with adhesive (plus screws to hold it while the adhesive cures) — it's not a magnetic or quick-release solution.
Power note for vehicle installs
Starlink Mini can be sensitive to unstable 12V power sources. If you're running it from a vehicle battery or DC system, we recommend adding a voltage booster/regulator (8–30VDC to 35VDC, 3A) to maintain a stable supply, regardless of which mount you choose.
