Starlink Cable Setup Explained (RJ45, SPX, Adapters)

Starlink terminals use different proprietary connectors depending on generation, so the right cable or adapter depends on which dish you have:

  • Starlink Gen 2 (Standard Actuated) uses an SPX-style proprietary connector at the dish.
  • Starlink Gen 3 / V4 (Standard) and Starlink Mini use a different proprietary connector to their router/power supply.

Because these aren't standard RJ45 (Ethernet) plugs, you generally need an adapter if you want to run a normal Ethernet cable to a switch, access point, or other network device.

⚠️ Data-only vs. power-carrying adapters — know the difference

For Gen 2 specifically, we sell two different adapters that are easy to confuse but do very different jobs:

  • RJ45 Ethernet Adapter for Starlink Gen 2 (router end) is data only — it cannot carry power to the dish. Use it to add wired network devices downstream of your Gen 2 router.
  • Starlink SPX Plug to RJ45 Adapter (dish end) is designed to carry power through to the dish, but only when paired with a Spacetek StarPower power supply — it isn't a generic PoE adapter for use with any third-party PoE injector.

Using the router-end adapter where you need the dish-end (power-carrying) adapter is the most common mix-up — if in doubt, ask us which one your setup needs before ordering.

Common cable & adapter scenarios

1. I need a standard Ethernet (RJ45) connection from my Gen 2 router

The Gen 2 router doesn't have a built-in RJ45 port. Use our RJ45 Ethernet Adapter for Starlink Gen 2 to get a standard Ethernet connection so you can connect switches, access points, or other wired devices. This adapter is data only and cannot power the dish.

For Gen 2, we stock SPX replacement cables from 1.8m up to 92m to replace or extend the run between the dish and router.

3. I need to join or extend an existing Ethernet-style cable run

Use our IP68 CAT6A RJ45 Joiner to join or extend compatible Starlink/Ethernet-style cable runs without cutting and re-terminating.

4. I'm passing a cable through a wall, roof, or enclosure and need a weatherproof seal

6. Powering a Gen 2 dish via RJ45 (e.g. with Spacetek StarPower)

Use the Starlink SPX Plug to RJ45 Adapter to convert the dish's SPX-style plug to a shielded RJ45 connection for use with a Spacetek StarPower power supply. This is the adapter you need if power has to reach the dish — not the router-end data-only adapter in scenario 1.
